Walks and Local Interest

The Wye Valley is a fantastic place to walk and plenty of fabulous landscape to appreciate and a host of wildlife to enjoy.  We have put together some walks which we know you will enjoy.  Try them and pop back to the Mill Race for a refreshing drink and a bite to eat!

Woodland Walk (1 hour)

Park at the Mill Race and walk along the pavement to Walford church.  From the church the route picks up the way of old Ross - Wye Valley railway line with views to the right of Goodrich Castle with Goodrich village in the distance. Cross back towards the B4234 at the side of Walford Sawmills, over a stile, crossing the road (with care), continue directly opposite, bearing left up a gentle incline into the picturesque lower woods of Leys Hill. The route will take you through the trees back in the direction of Ross with views of the Chase woods and Bulls Hill before you.  Rejoin the B4234 at Walford Church and then back to the Mill Race.

River Walk (3 hours)

Park at Goodrich Castle and walk back to the Castle access road (1), turn left.  Cross the bridge over the B4229 (2) and follow the sign for Coppet Hill Nature Reserve (3).  Turn right at the single horse chesnut tree.  Continue for 366m (4). Follow the path to the youth hostel driveway (5) and then take the footpath that runs parallel, down the wooden steps and along the (usually muddy!) path to reach  T-junction beside the River Wye.  Turn right along the Wye Valley Walk (6) and pass underneath the bridge.  After 114m look for 6 wooden steps down to your left at the fork.  Take the steps to remain close to the river (7) and continue to follow the river.  Turn right at the sign for Coppet Hill (8) and begin the arduous woodland ascent.  You will get some amazing views.  Follow the path which joins the Castle access road back to the car park.
